Listening

The player

The player plays a saved meditation and shows its full script while it plays. Speech audio is generated the first time each passage is needed, so playback can start before the whole meditation has audio.

The player showing the script with the current passage highlighted, the cover and title, the timeline, the Playback Settings, Play and More buttons, and the spaciousness slider.

Open a meditation

  • From chat: tap a saved meditation card. An unsaved draft shows Save & Play instead. It saves the draft and opens Playback Settings before the first play.
  • From My Library: tap a meditation card.

A saved meditation opens with its current voice, music and ending sound. To change them first, open the card's actions menu and choose Voice and Music.

While a meditation plays, Open Meadow keeps the screen on, in browsers that support it.

Keyboard control of the timeline

The timeline also works with the keyboard. When it has focus, these keys move the playback position:

KeyWhat it does
Right Arrow or Up ArrowMoves forward by 1% of the meditation.
Left Arrow or Down ArrowMoves back by 1% of the meditation.
Shift with an arrow keyMoves by 10% of the meditation instead.
HomeJumps to the start.
EndJumps to the end.

Script view

The player shows the whole script, with section headings, spoken passages and pauses. The current passage is highlighted as the meditation plays.

  • Tap a passage or pause to jump to it.
  • If you tap a passage that has no audio yet, Open Meadow generates speech from that point.

On a phone held upright, the script fills the screen and the controls sit at the bottom. On wider screens, including a phone turned sideways, the script appears beside the cover and controls.

How speech is generated

Open Meadow generates speech audio when you open a meditation in the player, passage by passage. Playback starts as soon as the first passage is ready. The remaining passages are generated in order while you listen.

Each voice has its own audio. When you choose a new voice in the player's Playback Settings, Open Meadow starts generating its audio right away, from the current passage. A voice listed under Ready to play already has audio for this meditation and plays without generating new audio. Generating speech uses credits. Playing audio that already exists never does.
