Listening

Spaciousness

The spaciousness slider changes the length of a meditation's silences while it plays. It does not change the speech, so moving it never generates new audio and never uses credits.

Use the slider

The slider sits under the play controls. Moving it toward short pauses makes the meditation tighter, and toward long pauses makes it slower. The labels appear while you drag. The change applies immediately.

On a phone turned sideways, or any wide screen less than 480 pixels tall, the player hides the slider to fit the script beside the controls. Turn the phone upright to show it.

The player while the spaciousness slider moves toward long pauses: the short pauses and long pauses labels are visible, and each pause in the script shows its adjusted length, such as 14s pause

What changes

The middle of the slider leaves pauses unchanged. At either end, the slider removes or adds up to the full written length of each adjustable pause.

An adjusted pause never drops below 1 second. For example, at the long end a [pause 10s] plays as 20 seconds and a [pause 10s open] plays as 30 seconds.

Spaciousness and target duration

When a meditation has a target duration, Open Meadow first scales its pauses to match that duration. The slider then adjusts from that point. A meditation can therefore end up longer or shorter than its target when the slider is away from the middle.

Where the setting is saved

  • Open Meadow saves the slider position separately for each of your meditations.
  • Downloaded MP3 files use the saved position.
  • On a meditation someone shared with you, the slider starts at the owner's saved position. It works while you listen, but your position is not saved.
