Creating Meditations

Create a meditation in chat

Most meditations in Open Meadow are created in the chat. There, Omi, the AI assistant, writes meditation scripts with you. A conversation can be open-ended, or a direct request for a specific meditation.

Start a chat

Choose New Chat in the app navigation. Type your message, or use the microphone button to dictate it. Omi can chat in many languages.

Write a message

On a computer with a mouse or trackpad, Enter sends the message and Shift+Enter adds a new line. On a touch screen, Enter adds a new line and the send button sends the message. Once a message fills the message box, Enter adds a new line on every device.

When a message fills the message box, the Expand Message button appears in its top corner. It opens a larger editor that fills the screen. Pasting long text that does not fit in the message box opens the larger editor automatically. In the larger editor, Enter adds a new line and the send button sends the message. Closing the editor keeps the text in the message box.

Dictate a message

The microphone button, Start Voice Dictation, records your voice and turns it into text. The first time, the browser asks for permission to use the microphone. While you speak, the message box shows a waveform and the recording time, and the screen stays on. Three buttons end the recording:

ButtonWhat it does
CrossDiscards the recording.
Check markAdds the text to the message box, so you can review or change it before sending.
ArrowAdds the text and sends the message.

If the message box already has text, the dictated text is added after it. Dictation does not use credits.

If the recording cannot be turned into text, the Couldn’t send your recording dialog keeps the recording. Try Again sends it again, and Cancel removes it. When the browser has no access to a microphone, the button shows a crossed-out microphone with the label Microphone unavailable.

Talk it through

You don't need to know what you want. You can describe how you feel, what you are going through, or what you would like to explore. Omi may ask a question or two, suggest an approach, or answer questions about the app. When the meditation is clear, Omi writes a script draft.

Ask for a specific meditation

If you already know what you want, ask for it directly. You can specify any of these:

  • Practice: for example breath awareness, body scan, loving-kindness, visualization or a practice from your own tradition.
  • Length: for example 5, 10 or 45 minutes.
  • Style and pacing: for example more silence, fewer words, a warmer or more neutral tone.
  • Structure: for example the sections you want, or a closing reflection.
  • Context: for example before sleep, during a commute or with a group.

This works well if you follow a method and want more control.

Review the script draft

Omi writes the meditation as a Script Draft card in the chat. Tap it to read the whole script. To change it, ask in the chat, for example "make the middle section longer" or "remove the visualization". When you are happy with it, choose Save & Play.

The More menu on the draft card offers Edit Script, to edit the script yourself before saving, Copy Script and Draft Details. Draft Details shows what Omi was asked to write, including the Writing Mode, such as Preserve Script or Adapt Script.

Saving turns the draft into a meditation in My Library. The saved card's menu also offers Voice and Music, Rename and Download. See Create your first meditation for the full first-time flow.

A chat in which the user asks for a short meditation before work, and Omi replies with a Script Draft card titled A Settled Start, with a Save & Play button

Build on earlier meditations

Omi can see the meditations in your library. You can refer to one by its title, for example "Write a new version of Morning Breath, but for the evening" or "Create something in the style of Quiet Harbor". Omi reads the meditation and uses it as a reference. Omi can also delete a saved meditation when you ask.

To start from a specific meditation, you can also choose Adapt on its card in My Library. See Edit or adapt a meditation.

Meditation length

There is no fixed maximum length. Meditations longer than about 60 minutes are not fully tested and may be less reliable. Omi plans the speech and pauses together to reach the length you ask for. You can also change the pacing while you listen with the spaciousness slider.

Rate Omi's replies

Each of Omi's replies has a thumbs up and a thumbs down button. A rating tells the Open Meadow team which replies worked well and which did not, and it includes the text of the reply. Choosing a thumb opens a dialog, What worked well? or What went wrong?, where you can add a comment and choose Submit, or choose Skip.

Choosing the same thumb again removes the rating. Choosing the other thumb changes it. The buttons are hidden while privacy mode is on.

Past chats

Your chats are listed under Chats in the app navigation, newest first. Open Meadow names each chat after its content. The More button next to a chat offers:

  • Rename: gives the chat your own title. Open Meadow keeps that title and no longer renames the chat.
  • Delete: deletes the chat permanently, after a confirmation. Meditations saved from the chat stay in My Library, but they no longer show See Chat. Omi also no longer uses the chat's summary in new chats.

Chat limits

LimitValue
One message40,000 characters
All your messages in one chat60,000 characters

When a chat reaches the total limit, you can still read it, and you can continue in a new chat.

A new chat does not start from zero. Omi keeps a summary of earlier chats, though not a complete record, so it helps to mention important details again.

Long source material

Open Meadow works best with focused material. For whole books, long chapters or large research collections, it helps to reduce the material first:

  1. Use a tool such as Google NotebookLM to summarize long sources and extract the key ideas.
  2. Optionally, use Claude or another writing assistant to draft meditation-oriented text from those notes.
  3. Paste the summary, excerpts or draft into an Open Meadow chat.

Credits

Chatting and writing scripts use credits. Long chats use more credits, so Open Meadow suggests a new chat when one gets long. See Plans and credits.
