Voices and Languages

Meditations in other languages

Omi can chat and write meditation scripts in many languages, and Gemini and ElevenLabs voices read them aloud.

Voice typeLanguagesPlans
GeminiAlmost any languageAll plans, including Free
ElevenLabsMany languages, plus three voices for Spanish from SpainSubscription, trial, or extra credits on Free

Gemini voices speak almost any language, on every plan, including Free. They also read languages that ElevenLabs voices don't, such as Persian, Hebrew or Thai.

ElevenLabs voices speak 32 languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

ElevenLabs voices often sound the most natural in European languages. For non-European languages, such as Chinese, Japanese, Hindi or Arabic, Gemini voices are often the better choice.

Kokoro voices in other languages

Kokoro also has voices for Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese and Hindi. The app labels them Low quality, and Gemini or ElevenLabs voices are the better choice for these languages.

How Playback Settings handles languages

Playback Settings shows the voices that speak the meditation's language. Voices that cannot read it are hidden. Choose Show Incompatible Voices to see them. Tapping an incompatible voice plays its preview but does not select it. Choosing Done then explains that the meditation needs a voice that speaks its language.

Regional accents

English, Spanish and Portuguese meditations always have accent badges above the voice list in Playback Settings:

LanguageAccents
EnglishAmerican, British, Indian, Australian
SpanishLatin American, European
PortugueseBrazilian, European

In the picker, the English accent badges use short labels: US, UK, IN and AU.

The first badge has the language's name and lists every voice that speaks the language. An accent badge lists the voices that can speak with that accent. Tapping a badge only filters the list. The accent is saved when you choose a voice under a badge.

Laura, Daniel, Rachel and Paul, the Gemini studio voices, can read with any of these accents. Under British, Indian, Australian or European, the list shows the accent next to the name, for example Laura · British, and plays a preview in that accent. American, Latin American and Brazilian are the default accents, so under those badges these voices sound the same as under the language badge.

Other voices have a fixed accent and sound the same under every badge. Nate, Max, Regina and Theo are British. Emily and James, two Kokoro voices, are British too. Javier, Lucía and María speak European Spanish.

Nora and Owen speak American English, Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. They can also read European Spanish: under European in a Spanish meditation, the list shows Nora · European and Owen · European and plays a European Spanish preview.

When Open Meadow recognizes a regional variety in a script, Playback Settings marks its badge with small yellow sparkles. For a variety without its own badge, such as Spanish from Paraguay or French from Canada, it adds an extra badge named after the region. This works in any language. Only the Gemini studio voices can read these extra accents, and they have no previews yet. Open Meadow never chooses an accent for you based on the script.

A new meditation starts with the accent of your last meditation in the same language, if its voice can read with that accent. A new accent for a Gemini studio voice creates new audio, and so does switching Nora or Owen to or from European Spanish. Audio in the previous accent is kept, so switching back plays it without new credits.

Voice previews in other languages

Gemini and ElevenLabs voices have previews in these languages:

  • Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian
  • Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Dutch, Swedish, Czech, Romanian and Hungarian
  • Chinese, Turkish, Malay, Arabic and Vietnamese
  • Persian, for Gemini voices only

Playback Settings plays the preview in the meditation's language when one exists, and the English preview otherwise. Kokoro voices and the Spanish from Spain voices have one preview, in their own language. The Voices and languages page has a tab for each of these languages.

Writing in another language

Omi can write a meditation in the language you chat in, or in another language you ask for. Pasted scripts can be in any language too. The duration estimate takes non-Latin scripts, such as Cyrillic, Persian or Chinese, into account.
